![]() The plot and the way the twins interact in this book is really cool. As they soon learn, Roger and Dodger had been created by a society of alchemists with an evil goal. Their similarities were no coincidence or accident. Then, they meet up again as graduate students at UC Berkeley, and that's when the adventure really begins. Suspiciously, they were also born on the same day and had the same strange eyes (although Roger was colorblind while Dodger had problems with depth perception.) But, as they grew older, adults convinced each of them that the other had never actually existed. When they were young, Roger (who lives in Cambridge MA and loves words) and Dodger (who lives in Palo Alto and loves math) had a psychic link that allowed them to see through each other's eyes, and to help each other with their homework. ![]() ![]() (click on names to see more mathematical fiction A list compiled by Alex Kasman ( College of Charleston) ![]()

![]() He draws Errol and Ava skinny, with white skin and pink noses. MacPherson’s illustrations are sweet, with a sketchy, contemporary style. Walton gently explains Tilly’s gender, which is a small ripple in the lives of children at play, and subtly pokes at gender roles with Errol’s tea parties and Ava’s robot building. Life goes on as normal for Errol and Tilly, and as before, they ride Errol’s bike, plant vegetables in the garden, eat lunch in the treehouse, and have tea parties when it rains. Tilly has one adjustment to make-she refashions her bow tie into a hair bow-and Ava, encouraging her to wear what she likes, takes her own hair bow off to let her long red hair go free. ![]() Ava tells her what a great name that is and invites her to go play. ![]() On arriving, she greets Tilly by her old name, but Errol introduces Tilly. So, you think you know the rest? Think again. ![]() Along came a wolf, who huffed and puffed. Once upon a time three pigs built three houses, out of straw, sticks, and bricks. Fans of Tuesday’s frogs and Sector 7’s clouds will be captivated by old friends-the Three Pigs of nursery fame and their companions-in a new guise. Dialogue balloons, text excerpts, and a wide variety of illustration styles guide the reader through a dazzling fantasy universe to the surprising and happy ending. Satisfying both as a story and as an exploration of the nature of story, The Three Pigs takes visual narrative to a new level. The transition signals the start of a freewheeling adventure with characteristic David Wiesner effects-cinematic flow, astonishing shifts of perspective, and sly humor, as well as episodes of flight. But the wolf’s huffing and puffing blows the first pig right out of the story. This Caldecott Medal-winning picture book begins placidly (and familiarly) enough, with three pigs collecting materials and going off to build houses of straw, sticks, and bricks. ![]() ![]() Meanwhile on Earth the Japanese scientist Nemoto fears her worst nightmares are coming true.
